Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth. But unlike dental implants, which get rooted to your jawbone, or dental bridges, which Dr. Kulaly cements in your mouth, dentures are removable.

That means that getting your dentures doesn’t require any surgery and can be accomplished quickly without any need to prepare your remaining teeth.

What types of dentures are available?

At Harbor Dental, Dr. Kulaly offers three types of dentures to her patients:

Temporary dentures

If you’re getting a dental implant or bridge, there’s a waiting process. As you wait, either for your jawbone to heal or for your bridge to be created, you may not want to walk around with a gap in your smile. And you don’t have to. With temporary dentures, Dr. Kulaly gives you a quick and easy way to fill out your smile.

Partial dentures

If you’re missing a few consecutive teeth, dentures are an extremely efficient way to replace them. Dr. Kulaly creates your denture to fit in your mouth perfectly, ensuring your replacement teeth are sized, shaped, and colored to blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

Your partial denture is affixed to a plastic base colored to match your gums. A metal framework may also be necessary to hold the partial denture in place.

Complete dentures

If you’re missing all of your teeth or you’re planning to have a full arch of teeth extracted, Dr. Kulaly offers complete dentures. These dentures replace the full arch of your missing teeth with a single piece that you can pop in and out of your mouth at your convenience.

Will I have to wait to get my dentures?

Not necessarily. If you’ve looked into getting dentures before, you’ve most likely heard that there is a waiting period, usually 12 weeks, between tooth extraction and denture creation.

This is because your gums and bones shift as they heal over the coming months. But you don’t have to wait and walk around with a gap in your smile for that long anymore.

Instead, Dr. Kulaly offers immediate dentures. You can wear these dentures right away, then have the fit adjusted as your mouth heals.
